KARL MARKOVICS

 

Karl is an Austrian actor and film director. He has worked extensively on international productions, and collaborated with acclaimed directors such as Terrence Malick, and Wes Anderson. He was born in Vienna, and from an early age harboured the ambition to become a stage actor. Despite failing the entrance exam for the renowned Max-Reinhardt-Seminar, Karl did not let this deter him, and he began performing at the Serapions Theatre in Vienna. He continued to hone his craft throughout the 80s, garnering acclaim for his captivating performances with the Wiener Ensemble. His theatrical prowess shone in numerous productions, including his 2005 directorial debut of Eugène Ionesco’s THE BALD SINGER at the Theater in der Josefstadt. While theatre remained his first love, the screen brought Karl wider recognition domestically. His role as ‘Detective Ernst Stockinger’ in the hit series INSPECTOR REX and its spin-off STOCKINGER made him a household name. However, he actively sought diverse roles, showcasing his versatility in projects such as: HINTERHOLZ 8; KOMM, SÜSSER TOD; and his role as far-right terrorist Franz Fuchs in the TV film FRANZ FUCHS - EIN PATRIOT. Karl’s artistic ambitions extended beyond acting, and in 2011, he marked his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed film BREATHING which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. He is perhaps best known to international audiences for the Oscar-winning THE COUNTERFEITERS where he delivered a powerful performance as the Jewish forger ‘Salomon Sorowitsch’. Other notable performances include: the role of ‘Wolf’ in Wes Anderson’s acclaimed comedy THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, opposite Harvey Keitel and Ralph Fiennes; as ‘Charles Mangel’ in Jonathan Jakubowicz’s biographical drama RESISTANCE based on the life of Marcel Marceau; and Terrence Malick’s A HIDDEN LIFE. He can currently be seen opposite Kate Winslet in the HBO series THE REGIME, which is directed and executive produced by Stephen Frears.
